Performance of diffusion absorption refrigeration cycle with organic working fluids.
Author(s) : ZOHAR A., JELINEK M., LEVY A., et al.
Summary
A diffusion absorption refrigeration (DAR) cycle is driven by heat and utilizes as working fluid a binary solution of refrigerant and absorbent, and an auxiliary inert gas which causes the refrigerant partial pressure to drop as it enters the evaporator. Commercial DAR systems operate with ammonia-water solution, ammonia as the refrigerant and hydrogen or helium as the inert gas. The typical fluid temperature inside the generator in ammonia-water systems is about 200°C and the total pressure is about 25 bars. In this work, the performance of a simplified DAR system working with an organic absorbent (DMAC - dimethylacetamide) and three different refrigerants was examined numerically. The refrigerants were: chlorodifluoromethane (R-22), difluoromethane (R-32) and 2-chloro-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-124). Helium was chosen as the inert gas. To the best of the author's knowledge, it is the first time that simulations are conducted for DAR cycle with organic solution. The performance was examined for different operating conditions, with the aim to utilize lower generator temperatures and achieve lower system pressure. Similar behaviour was found for all systems, regarding the coefficient of performance and evaporator temperature as functions of generator temperature and rich and poor solutions concentrations. It was found that typical generator temperature with the new substances was 150°C. In addition, the condensation temperature of systems working with an organic absorbent was about 40°C, a fact which requires a low ambient temperature for the system to operate. This study is based on a numerical solution of a thermodynamic model for DAR cycles, previously developed by our group.
