Performance of retail and commercial refrigeration systems.

Summary

The performance of well freezers, chest freezers, frozen and chilled door cabinets (solid or glass door) and open fronted chilled cabinets under test conditions are presented to compare energy consumption and temperature control. Analysis demonstrated that maximum temperatures in cabinets were generally in the most exposed (to ambient) areas and that minimum temperatures were located in the least exposed areas. Large differences were found in the efficiency of the cabinets examined. Differences in energy consumed by cabinets of similar size were large. Energy consumption was not well related to temperature performance. Substantial opportunities exist to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by selection of the most efficient cabinets.
