Performance optimization of an adsorption chiller: cycle time and duration of isobaric phases.

Summary
Adsorption chillers (AC) are about to be market available systems and the optimization of their performance is of prime importance to make them more competitive with absorption and compression machines. This experimental study was focused on the selection of an optimal strategy for managing AC in terms of cycle time and relative duration of isobaric phases (R = adsorption time/desorption time) as a function of the driving temperature. The tests were carried out at ITAE-CNR using a single stage lab-scale adsorption chiller connected to a test bench able to reproduce a wide range of operating conditions and to evaluate the coefficient of performance and the specific cooling power. The adsorber was filled with a new composite sorbent "LiNO3/porous matrix" specifically developed at BIC-RAS to operate at low regeneration temperature. The results demonstrated that the optimal cycle performance can be reached if the isobaric adsorption phase is prolonged at the expense of the desorption one. The gain is especially large at higher driving temperatures and short cycle times. At lower driving temperatures, the optimal cycle duration significantly increased as well as a tendency towards reduction of the optimal ratio R was observed.
