Summary

The study investigated the performance of adsorption heat pumps for small scale cogeneration systems. The system is aiming at an integrated system of gas engine and adsorption heat pump for houses. The adsorption heat pump provides heating and cooling driven by waste gas and jacket cooling water of the gas engine. The activated carbon-HFC refrigerant pair was chosen as the adsorbent-adsorbate pair so that the system work at positive pressure. The adsorption isotherm of HFC onto activated carbon was measured by volumetric method, and adsorption kinetics was predicted from the time series data. The dynamic simulation model of the adsorption heat pump was built based on the measured equilibrium and kinetics. The performance characteristics of the activated carbon-HFC adsorption heat pump were analyzed and the optimal design and operation of the system were proposed.
