Performance relationship of air-cooled CO2-gas cooler under transcritical and subcritical conditions.

Number: 0232

Author(s) : DOORNBOS G., HEININGEN K. van, GERRITSEN J.

Summary

A typical gas cooler is selected at 2 K approach under transcritical conditions, while a well selected condenser should read a temperature difference of 6 – 8 K (DT1) under sub critical conditions. Since both should be performance readings of the same heat exchanger, knowledge about the relationship between both selection criteria should be known.
This paper describes the performance relationship based on measurements and model calculations. Especially the definition of the local and average driving temperature difference is discussed as a basis for the overall heat transfer coefficient.
As a conclusion it can be stated, that under moderate European seasonal temperature cycles, starting from a well selected condenser under sub critical conditions, an acceptable small approach can be expected in trans critical conditions.
