Summary

Heat recovery potential of a R744 refrigeration system integrated with Pressure Exchanger (PX) is explored through dynamic analysis. A mathematical model of PX, developed using CFD simulation and validated using published experimental data, is then utilized to construct a state-of-the-art model of the PX using the standard Thermal Systems library in Dymola©. An Italian supermarket referred in MultiPACK project having low and medium temperature display cabinets total average cooling load of 132 kW is simulated. The effect of load fluctuation on the flow distribution between the PX and a high pressure expansion valve operating in parallel are assessed to get a better insight. The proposed configuration delivers an average heat load of 160 kW and a pressure lift of 44 bar for a rotor speed of 1000 RPM, which is significantly higher than a conventional work recovery device like an ejector. The heating COP varies between 4.5 to 5.75.
