Phase-change storage systems for enhanced heat pump performance.

Author(s) : CHARTERS W. W. S., AYE L., CHAICHANA C., et al.

Summary

Recent simulation studies involving ground source heat pumps have indicated the potential for improved performance of such systems under a range of climatic conditions with diverse heating and cooling loads by providing additional thermal storage. This can be on either side of the heat pump circuit and paraffin waxes are now commercially available with phase change temperatures appropriate for both cold and hot side thermal storage. Careful system design with thermal storage can lead to reduced capacity for the installed unit, reduction in the length of the exchange coil, more rational overall system energy management.
