Phase-out of CFC refrigerants.

Summary

Based on the total mass of R12 in all Danish refrigeration and heat pump installations in 1986, a mathematical model is proposed to examine the possible development in demand for R12 for the period until year 2010. Parameters are: availability of new R12, of reclaimed R12, rate of emission, and mass of R12 recovered from obsolete plants. Based on proposed speed of conversion to other refrigerants, and with variations in the model parameters, three scenarios have been calculated. The author discusses the scenarios and states that serious shortage of new R12 will appear already in 1994-1995, and that it is very important that every plant owner/operator should establish a plan for conversion from R12. Also every effort to recover/reclaim, and to reduce emissions is required to assist in planning an orderly conversion, rather than risking to be forced to convert due to unforeseen lack of R12.
