Summary

During the last few years, epidermic and subepidermic lesions have been observed on kiwifruits in cold storage in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. In some cases, over 50% of the fruits were affected. The symptoms were worst during January-February on fruit stored in both normal refrigerators and in controlled atmospheres. Species of Phialophora were consistently isolated from infected material, and isolates were found to cause similar symptoms when inoculated into kiwifruits in the laboratory.
