Summary

THE PRESENT WORK IS ESSENTIALLY A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW OF THE MAIN PHYSICAL STUDIES ON SOLUTIONS USED IN CRYOBIOLOGY. THE LIVING CELLS ARE GENERALLY PLACED PRIOR TO FREEZING, IN A SOLUTION, THE ROLE OF WHICH IS PROTECTING THE CELLS AGAINST THE EFFECTS OF WATER CRYSTALLIZATION. THE PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF CRYOPROTECTANTS IS STILL POORLY KNOWN, HOWEVER, THE FORMATION OF A VITREOUS STATE ON COOLING IS OFTEN REFERRED TO.
