Summary

It has been suggested that direct interactions between certain solutes and membranes can contribute to their protective effects. This study investigates the possibility of direct interactions between common phospholipids and the cryoprotectant hydroxyethyl starch. No evidence of a direct interaction is found. Implications for the cryoprotective mechanisms of hydroxyethyl starch are discussed. A method to assess accurately surfactant contamination in monolayer-solute studies is presented.
