Summary

IT WAS LATE IN 1877 THAT OXYGEN WAS FIRST LIQUIFIED BY COOLING UNDER PRESSURE FOLLOWED BY ISENTROPIC EXPANSION. FURTHER EXPERIMENTS FOLLOWED IN RAPID SUCCESSION AND BY THE TURN OF THE CENTURY CONTINUAL PRODUCTION OF LIQUID AIR PRODUCTS WAS POSSIBLE, AND DEWAR HAD INVENTED HIS STORAGE FLASK FOR THE HYDROGEN HE HAD LIQUIFIED. THIS ARTICLE GIVES A BRIEF HISTORY OF THESE EVENTS AND FOLLOWS THEM THROUGH TO THE PRESENT TO SHOW CRYOGENICS IN USE TODAY. D.W.H.
