Summary

Polyolesters are synthetic lubricants manufactured primarily for use in jet engines. Certain polyolesters are suitable for use in refrigerating systems, particularly with HFC refrigerants where they have the ability to produce as good a boundary layer lubricating film as is formed by the chlorine in CFCs combining with mineral oil. Further advantages over mineral oils are a lower viscosity change with temperature, a wax-free composition, and compatibility with most refrigerants, including CFCs. The major disadvantages are a higher cost and the ability to absorb moisture rapidly. The latter demands that moisture exclusion is vital in maintenance or installation work. D.W.H.
