Summary

A condition, not observed before with grapefruit, was described and termed "spongy fruit", which increased as irradiation dosage increased. The authors conclude that gibberellic-acid treated grapefruit will tolerate irradiation dosage of 0.3 kilogray without serious damage; however, at dosage of 0.6 kilogray, serious peel damage detrimental to fruit quality will likely develop during storage.
