Summary

A strong desire to use “green” refrigerants and highly-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning systems has been at the forefront of the Danish refrigeration industry since a carbon tax was introduced in 2001. The tax led to a strong increase in interest in the use of ammonia and hydrocarbons as refrigerants. The interest became an essential need for many after a ban on the use of HFC in new systems was introduced in 2007. This paper explores the practical concerns that have become predominant in minimising carbon generation/tax, and using ammonia and propane refrigeration systems for relatively commonplace applications in Denmark. It also explores the key considerations in the recent development of a standard air-cooled propane chiller range and the application of a similar product to replace the R22 chillers for a major hospital.
