Summary

A THEORETICAL APPROACH, BASED ON THE THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF STRONG ELECTROLYTE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS, WAS USED TO CALCULATE THE WATER ACTIVITY AT 278 AND 283 K OF SELECTED SATURATED SALT SOLUTIONS FREQUENTLY USED AS STANDARDS IN THE RANGE OF MICROBIAL GROWTH. THE RESULTS AGREED VERY WELL WITH EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS FOR MOST SALTS STUDIED, WHICH INCLUDED SODIUM BROMIDE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, STRONTIUM CHLORIDE, AMMONIUM SULPHATE, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, BARIUM CHLORIDE AND POTASSIUM SULPHATE.
