THE CHEMOLITHOTROPHIC BACTERIA ARE UNSUITED TO LONG-TERM PRESERVATION BY FREEZING OR FREEZE-DRYING, AND IT HAS BEEN NECESSARY TO RESORT TO ACTIVE CULTURE MAINTENANCE. AN IMPROVED FREEZE-DRYING METHOD WAS APPLIED TO THE PRESERVATION OF EIGHT STRAINS OF CHEMOLITHOTROPHIC BACTERIA. THE AUTHORS GIVE THE RESULTS OF THEIR OBSERVATIONS ON THE EIGHT STRAINS.
