PROPERTIES AND BEHAVIOUR OF LIQUID HELIUM IN ROTATING MACHINERY.

Author(s) : HOFMANN A.

Summary

THE ROTATING WINDINGS OF FUTURE SUPERCONDUCTING GENERATORS WILL BE COOLED WITH TWO-PHASE HELIUM, I.E. SATURATED VAPOUR WITH SUBATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE NEAR THE AXIS OF ROTATION AND SINGLE-PHASE FLUID WITH SUPERCRITICAL PRESSURE NEAR THE PERIPHERY. IT IS DISCUSSED WHICH DATA ARE AVAILABLE TO PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE OF SUCH COOLING CIRCUITS. THIS INCLUDES TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION IN HIGH SPEED ROTATING FRAMES, FORCED AND NATURAL CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER AND FRICTION LOSS OF HELIUM CIRCULATION. FINALLY IT IS DISCUSSED HOW THE DETERIORATION OF SOME COOLING PARAMETERS CAN BE COMPENSATED BY OPERATION OF SUCH ROTORS IN THE SELF-PUMPING MODE.
