Summary

Recent developments in postharvest technology for fresh produce are described, including: new methods for improved control of O2 concentration, based on monitoring ethanol production (Dynamic Control System, DCS) or chlorophyll (Harvest Watch); ethanol vapour treatment and Initial Low Oxygen Stress (ILOS) for non-chemical control of scald; use of 1-MCP for prevention of scald in apples, and prolonging storability in apples, plums and other fruits and vegetables, acknowledging that in some cases 1-MCP can increase sensitivity to disorders in controlled-atmosphere storage.
