Summary

GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLES WERE HARVESTED IN 7 LOCALITIES OF NORTHERN ITALY. THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS WERE MEASURED: COLOUR OF SKIN AND FLESH, FIRMNESS, DEFORMABILITY, SOLUBLE SOLIDS, ACIDITY, TOTAL AND REDUCING SUGARS AND STARCH CONTENT AT HARVEST. ALL QUALITY PARAMETERS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY THE LOCALITY AND FRUIT SIZE AND MANY WERE ALSO AFFECTED BY THE TREE ITSELF. DIFFERENCES IN QUALITY AMONG FRUIT FROM DIFFERENT LOCALITIES SEEM TO BE DUE NOT ONLY TO DIFFERENT RIPENING STAGES BUT ALSO TO DIFFERENT RIPENING PATTERNS.
