Summary
Desiccant technology is beginning to command a more visible portion of the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning market worldwide. It includes systems manufactured with desiccant components to provide cooling, dehumidification, and ventilation function in controlling the quality of indoor environment in industrial and commercial sectors. In the United States, annual production of desiccant systems and components in 1997 was worth nearly USD 100 million, and it is expected to more than triple by the year 2003. Within the next several years, the number of commercial systems, types of applications, and system manufacturers will more than double. Industry is thus beginning to see a return on its investment, which currently stands at about USD 5 million per year. Many avenues of marketing, production, and technical improvements are being pursued. The most important reason, however, for increasing the market penetration in the commercial sector, as well as the industrial, will be reduction of rotor matrix costs for dehumidifiers and enthalpy exchangers, and a continuous effort of educating architects and engineers on the equipment and the benefits it can bring to the customer.
