Summary
Overall comfort in railway vehicles, particularly thermal comfort, is gaining a higher level of importance in achieving the necessary increased attractiveness of this form of public transport. Areas of importance include thermal comfort, indoor air quality, life cycle costs, energy efficiency and environmental aspects. New standards for air conditioning systems for main line as well as for urban and suburban rail vehicles guarantee defined comfort requirements. In addition research and testing on rail vehicles in test stands and operated under regular service condition is carried out to improve thermal comfort. As the HVAC systems contribute significantly to the overall energy balance considerable effort has been made to optimise also energy consumption. With respect to environmental aspects recent developments of air cycle air conditioning systems are an interesting alternative.
