Summary

IN 1954 THE SNCF INTRODUCED AIR CONDITIONING ON A TRIAL BASIS ON THE < MISTRAL > TRAIN. FROM 1956 TO 1972, 320 CARRIAGES WERE EQUIPPED WITH A SYSTEM IN WHICH AIR WAS BLOWN THROUGH THE CEILING. FROM 1971 ON, AIR CONDITIONING INSTALLATIONS WERE GROUPED TOGETHER UNDER THE CHASSIS ; THIS LED TO A SYSTEM OF AIR DIFFUSION BY INDUCTION UNITS. FROM 1971 TO 1982, 3,412 CARRIAGES AND 68 TGV SETS WERE EQUIPPED. THE REFRIGERATING POWER EXCHANGED VARIES FROM 24,360 TO 29,000 W. THE INSTALLATIONS ARE OF THE COMPRESSION TYPE WITH R12 AND R22. A CARRIAGE EQUIPPED WITH A THERMOELECTRIC HEAT PUMP, APPLYING THE PELTIER EFFECT, WAS BROUGHT INTO SERVICE IN 1977. THE POWER EXCHANGED IS OF THE ORDER OF 20,000 W.
