Summary

A PRACTICAL METHOD FOR THE REALIZATION OF THE LAMBDA TRANSITION TEMPERATURE OF LIQUID HELIUM 4 AS A THERMOMETRIC FIXED POINT IS PRESENTED. A DEVICE CALLED THE LAMBDA-POINT CELL WAS CONSTRUCTED AND ITSQUALITIES WERE VERY SATISFACTORY. THE PRINCIPLE OF THIS DESIGN IS BASED ON THE DRAMATIC CHANGE IN THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND THE EXTREMELY LARGE SPECIFIC HEAT OF LIQUID HELIUM 4 WHILE ITS TEMPERATURE PASSES THROUGH THE LAMBDA POINT. EXPERIMENTS SHOWED THAT WITH THE LAMBDA-POINT CELL, LAMBDA TRANSITION TEMPERATURE CAN BE REALIZED WITH A PRECISION OF 0.1 MILLIK OR BETTER.
