Summary
Heat pumps having been used for some 60 years have been brought to the marketplace since the 1960s only with subsidies. The recent research activities are aimed at improving the system competitiveness, performance and reliability. Works carried out by the three main supporters of the technology development are described: Europe, the United States and Japan.
