RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN REFRIGERATED SEA TRANSPORT.

Author(s) : STERA A. C.

Summary

AMONG THE 30 MILLION TONS OF PERISHABLE GOODS TRANSPORTED BY SEA ANNUALLY, UNDER CONTROLLED TEMPERATURE, 70 % ARE LOADED IN SHIPS WHICH ARE ENTIRELY OR PARTIALLY REFRIGERATED AND 30 % IN CONTAINERS. THE GOODS CARRIED IN REFRIGERATED SHIPS ARE ANALYZED, TOGETHER WITH NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THEIR DESIGN AND IN THE REFRIGERANTS USED. CHANGES IN CONTAINER SHIPS FOR INTEGRAL CONTAINERS AND IN REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS ARE GIVEN. THE NUMBER OF MECHANICALLY REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS HAS DOUBLED OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS. SHIPS TRANSPORTING ORANGE JUICE IN BULK ARE DISCUSSED, WHOSE TANKS ARE COOLED BY AIR CIRCULATION IN A DOUBLE EXTERNAL ENVELOPE. IMPORTANT PROGRESS IN COMPUTERIZED MANAGEMENT OF REFRIGERATING MACHINERY IS REPORTED, AS WELL AS PROGRESS IN THE CONTROL OF TEMPERATURE, RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE ON SHIPS AND IN CONTAINERS.
