Summary

Insulation contributes as much as refrigerating plants to keeping storage facilities cold. Insulation plays a static and passive role but particular attention must be paid to the way it is installed, and it is necessary to monitor its condition, especially around pipes. In case of carelessness, cold can make insulation ineffective and even can lead to the destruction of the cold store. Three experts of Cnefic tackle these points and give the reader the benefit of their field experience. Fire is another risk factor for cold storage to be taken into consideration. However, it is now less frequent thanks to developments in this field, which are continuing. The article argues for a better design of cold stores at a time when fewer and fewer are being built.
