REDUCING COST AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN PRODUCING ICE FOR THERMAL STORAGE.

Author(s) : STEWART W. E.

Summary

ONE METHOD OF COOL THERMAL STORAGE UTILIZES ICE AS A STORAGE PHASE CHANGE MEDIUM. IN CONVENTIONAL HARVESTING TYPE ICE MAKERS, 10 TO 20% OF THE ENERGY CONSUMED IS USED TO HARVEST THE ICE, IE REMOVE THE ICE GROWN ON THE EVAPORATOR SURFACE. A SLUSH ICE TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED ENABLES THE ICE TO SELF-RELEASE FROM THE EVAPORATOR SURFACE. THE OVERALL HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT FOR THE ICE-MAKING PROCESS IS INCREASED. THE APPROXIMATE ENERGY USAGE AND EQUIPMENT COST ADVANTAGES OF THE SLUSH ICE-MAKER SYSTEM ARE COMPARED TO A NOMINAL HARVESTING ICE MAKER.
