Type of article: Article
Summary
A joint industry research project "Reefers for the Future" was launched in January 1993. The example design developed, has a beam of 21 metres resulting in a L/B ratio of 6:1 (best performance for a speed of about 24 knots). Twin-screw propulsion is seen as essential (banana draught limitation of 7.4 metres, improved stability, increased hold capacity, and improved manoeuvring and handling characteristics in port). The article discusses the propulsion plant design, cargo handling and refrigeration considered in the design.
