Refrigerant blends: the realities.

Author(s) : HUGHES H. M.

Summary

Zeotropic binary and ternary mixtures are being suggested as substitutes for CFC compounds or azeotropic mixtures such as R502. The author points out the difficulties imposed by two factors, the temperature glide in evaporator and condenser, and the component segregation. Although temperature glide is often welcomed by researchers as enabling pure counterflow in heat exchange, the range of glide and configurations of heat exchanger design are not always compatible. An air-cooled condenser is quoted as an example. Component segregation due to fractionation may occur not only in a leaking system, where service techniques may be too poor to cope, but also in bulk storage at a manufacturers premises. D.W.H.
