Properties of blends which can be used as R502 substitutes in refrigeration.

Summary

R502, the refrigerant most used in supermarket refrigeration, has no direct replacement yet available of a single molecule form. Various mixtures have been suggested. The paper outlines several, falling into two categories, those based on R22 and those based on HFCs. In both categories only near azeotropes have been tested. They have to be non-flammable, with thermophysical properties and discharge temperatures similar to R502, good oil miscibility and with greenhouse effect potential lower than 1,0. Four blends are shown with characteristics comparable to R502. Of these two with at least one flammable component were tested for fractionation on leakage. Neither changed bulk composition by any serious degree and neither entered the flammable zone. The blends based on R22 have low ozone depletion and will be available commercially within 1 to 2 years. Zero depletion blends will take longer. In all, the temperature glide will be negligable. D.W.H.
