Summary

SOME OF THE CURRENT TRENDS IN REFRIGERATED SHIP DESIGN ARE DIS CUSSED SUCH AS PALLET FRIENDLY SHIPS FOR STOWAGE OF CARGO AND LOADING WITH ELEVATORS. THE USE OF FREQUENCY CONVERTERS FOR SPEED CONTROL OF FANS AND COMPRESSORS IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE START OF A TREND WHICH COULD LEAD TO VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL OF ALL MOTORS TO OPTIMISE ENERGY USE. NEW DESIGNS OF SHIP FOR THE CARRIAGE OF ORANGE JUICE ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH THE USE OF TANK CONTAINERS FOR THIS COMMODITY. REFRIGERATED CONTAINER SHIP DESIGN HAS STAGNATED BUT THERE ARE DEVELOPMENTS IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE SYSTEMS WHICH THE AUTHOR TREATS WITH CAUTION. SOME CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE USE OF CFC'S NOTABLY IN CONTAINERS WHICH CURRENTLY DEPEND ON R12. G.R.S.
