Summary

PROTOPLASTS OBTAINED FROM MESOPHYLL CELLS AND CALLUS CELL SUSPENSIONS OF 3 ALKALOID PRODUCING PLANTS, A. BELLADONNA, D. INNOXIA AND N. TABACUM SUBJECTED TO FREEZING IN LIQUID NITROGEN (77 K) IN PRESENCE OF DMSO, MANNITOL AND SUCROSE, AND THAWED AT 308 K (35 DEG C) FORMED CALLUS AND EVENTUALLY REGENERATED SHOOTS/PLANTS. THE PLANTS FORMED NORMAL FLOWERS AND SET SEEDS. THE DEGREE OF REVIVAL AND REGENERATION VARIED A GREAT DEAL. ATROPA PROTOPLASTS GAVE THE BEST RESPONSE, FOLLOWED BY NICOTIANA AND DATURA.
