REGENERATOR ANALYSIS: VALIDATION OF THE MS.2 STIRLING CYCLE CODE.

Author(s) : BAUWENS L., MITCHELL M. P.

Summary

THE MS.2 CODE IMPLEMENTS A NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM DETERMINED BY A LOW MACH NUMBER, ONE-DIMENSIONAL, TIME-DEPENDENT APPROXIMATION OF MOMENTUM, AND MASS AND ENERGY CONSERVATION. THE SCHEME IS CONSERVATIVE AND MONOTONE, HENCE FIRST-ORDER ACCURATE. BECAUSE THE EMPIRICAL MODELS FOR PRESSURE GRADIENTS ANDHEAT TRANSFER IMPLEMENTED IN THE CODE ARE BASED EXCLUSIVELY ON PUBLISHED EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, NO MECHANISM EXISTS FOR MACHINE-SPECIFIC < TUNE-UP > OR CALIBRATION. VERSION 1.1 OF THE CODE INCORPORATES VARIOUS ENHANCEMENTS; IT ALLOWS FORDUCTS BETWEEN HEAT EXCHANGERS AND THE REGENERATOR. DEAD VOLUMES AT THAT LOCATION ARE OFTEN DETRIMENTAL TO PERFORANE. VALIDATION RESULTS SPAN A RANGE OF EXPANSION SPACE TEMPERATURES FROM 40 TO 1,000 K. RESULTS FROM THE CODE ARE COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED BY THREE DIFFERENT TEAMS ON FOUR DIFFERENT MACHINES, TWO OF WHICH ARE ENGINES, THE OTHER TWO BEING MANCE WITHIN ABOUT 10% OF THE MEASUREMENT.
