Summary

AFTER PRECULTURE WITH 0.3 M SUCROSE AND 4 H-DEHYDRATION AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, UP TO 92 % OF ALGINATE-ENCAPSULATED SOMATIC EMBRYOS OF CARROT TOLERATED DIRECT FREEZING IN LIQUID NITROGEN. GOOD SURVIVAL (71 %) WAS ALSO OBTAINED AFTER TWO-STEPS FREEZING. SURVIVAL OF DEHYDRATED EMBRYOS DURING PRESERVATION DEPENDED ON THE TEMPERATURE OF STORAGE.
