Summary

THERMAL ANALYSIS OF SOMATIC EMBRYOS AND ENCAPSULATING MATERIAL DURING A FREEZE-THAW CYCLE WAS STUDIED BY DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY AS A FUNCTION OF THEIR WATER CONTENT. RESISTANCE OF SOMATIC EMBRYOS TO LIQUID NITROGEN WAS CORRELATED WITH GLASS TRANSITION BETWEEN 223 AND 203 K (-50 AND -70 DEG C). SIMILAR GLASS TRANSITIONS WERE OBTAINED WITH ENCAPSULATING MATERIAL AND HIGHLY CONCENTRATED SUCROSE SOLUTIONS.
