Summary

Avocado fruit (Persea americana) were exposed to air and to a modified atmosphere containing 0.1 to 0.44% O2 and 50 to 75% CO2 at 20 deg C for 0 to 5 days. Fruit exposed to modified atmosphere for more than one day and then ripened in air had exocarp and mesocarp injury. Fruit in modified atmosphere for more than one day had decreased concentrations of certain glycolytic metabolites. Other metabolites were not affected. Insecticidal modified atmosphere can only be used as a potential insect control treatment in avocado fruit for periods of 1 day or less.
