Summary
Combined drying and cooling of maize was investigated. It was established that combined drying makes it possible to store the grain at humidity rates of 15.5-16%. Refrigeration causes a loss of humidity of 1.2-1.5% linked with the latent heat of the water in the grain. Hence, the maize is marketed at 14-14.5% humidity. Thanks to refrigeration, the working capacity of the drier is increased from 46.3 to 60.7 t/h, with the overall energy cost reducing from 1086 to 787 megaJ/t (including refrigeration), giving a 27% overall saving.
