Summary

Refrigerant R-452A (ASHRAE 34 Class A1) has gained wide acceptance for use in the transport cold chain as a replacement for R-404A because of its ability to be a direct design compatible replacement. Finding a lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) direct design compatible replacement for R-452A has been a challenge. All candidates are either ASHRAE 34 Class A2L or A3 flammable and their thermophysical properties are not ideal.
This paper provides a review of proposed and potential future refrigerants with a GWP of less than 150 as suitable replacements for transport refrigeration. A summary of thermodynamic properties and cycle performance, along with flammability, stability, and toxicological properties will be provided for a variety of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant and hydrocarbons and their blends. In addition, insights into the technological challenges to incorporate these low GWP substitutes, and market viability are provided by potential application area.
