IIR document

Risk analysis for ammonia refrigeration systems.

Summary

The use of ammonia as a replacement for CFC's is on the increase. Environmental and safety concerns are highlighted. Local and regional inspectorates and authorities will demand conditions and technical facilities for the safe management of installations which contain ammonia. It is likely that authorities will demand a hazard assessment from the plant owner to guard against incidents before the environmental licence needed to take the unit into operation is granted. A quantitative risk assessment may also be required. The general experience of TNO (The Netherlands) in these studies is recognized and discussed. A Code of Practice has been developed to get those installations approved which were not previously inspected.
