Type of article: Article

Summary

The paper reviews the recently published guidance on the use of quantified risk assessment, with respect to major chemical industrial hazards (particularly large scale cryogenic systems and plant). The application of relevant hazard and risk assessment techniques is discussed and illustrated, with an exemplar study involving cryogenic storage of liquefied toxic gas. The example also discusses the implications for land use planning control of certain changes in plant and procedures to illustrate the Health and Safety Executive's use of tolerability criteria in the context of such siting controls.
