Summary

Thorough donor and good laboratory practice are fundamental to safe cryopreservation. However, microbiological contamination of low temperature refrigerators has to be assumed: they provide a dirty environment. Secure enclosure is therefore essential and some form of double enclosure is mandatory. With proper technique, gas phase storage provides effective preservation and avoids the risk of explosion.
