Scroll compressors for R744 (CO2) in refrigeration and heat pump applications.
Author(s) : WINANDY E.
Summary
This paper describes the development of the scroll compressor for refrigeration low temperature sub-critical applications and reviews the status of scroll with transcritical applications for heat pumps and medium temperature refrigeration. While the scroll compressor for subcritical applications is based on existing platforms due to similarities in operating conditions, using CO2 in the transcritical range with scroll compressors would require major design changes as operating pressures are significantly higher than with fluids used today. The performance of the scroll in these applications is discussed.
