A DEMONSTRATION HOUSE IN KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, HAS BEEN OPERATED WITH AN ICE MAKING HEAT PUMP. DURING THE WINTER, HEAT IS EXTRACTED FROM MORE THAN 50 METRIC TONS OF STORED WATER TO TURN IT TO ICE, WHICH IS USED IN THE SUMMER FOR AIR CONDITIONING. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE INSTALLATION IS DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH RELEVANT COST DATA. OPERATING EXPERIENCE IS REPORTED LEADING TO DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS FOR ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF ICE-BINS.
