Selection of compressors for low-temperature ammonia refrigeration systems.

Author(s) : BOWATER F. J.

Summary

Ammonia (NH3) operates with high compression ratios relative to various alternative available refrigerants. But it can provide the best efficiencies (COPs) of any system. This paper compares the relative benefits of screw compressor installations as against using reciprocating machines for such ammonia systems. The compressor manufacturers' claims are compared to operational field experience built up over 30 years of the writer's experiences and initial capital costs compared with running costs are presented for a typical large food industry project. A life cycle cost analysis is also analysed. Specific gas flow measurements are presented on an operational plant to back up the conclusions reached.
