Summary

A non-traditional air conditioning system, which is operating in France to serve a large building (81,200 m3, 4000 occupants) of a TV broadcast station, is described and its energy performance is analyzed. This system is based on individual reversible heat pump units for both heating and cooling service with sizes from 1 to 55 kilowatts of refrigerating capacity and from 1.5 to 60 kilowatts of heating capacity. All units are water condensed, being connected to a single water circuit, and supply heating or refrigeration directly to the air inside the conditioned spaces. Although this system is not as energy efficient during summer operation as a traditional system using indirect refrigeration and fan-coil units, it shows better energy performance in winter, when the simultaneous need for heating and refrigeration allows the heat rejected from the refrigeration cycle to be utilized as the low temperature energy input for the heat pump cycle.
