Summary

MOST SOURCES OF NATURAL GAS PRODUCE A MIXTURE WHICH CONTAINS NITROGEN, HELIUM AND SOMETIMES CARBON DIOXIDE AS WELL AS THE METHANE, ETHANE AND PROPANE ELEMENTS. INERT GASES SUCH AS NITROGEN SHOULD BE SEPARATED BEFORE THE GAS ENTERS A PIPELINE TO SAVE PUMPING COSTS. HELIUM MAY MAKE A PROFITABLE BY-PRODUCT AND FREQUENTLY THE HEAVY HYDROCARBONS HAVE TOO HIGH A CALORIFIC VALUE TO BE SUPPLIED DIRECTLY AS A NORMAL FUEL. THE REMOVAL OF ANY OF THESE COMPONENTS REQUIRES LOW-TEMPERATURE REFRIGERATION PROCESSES, MAINLY USING THE GASES THEMSELVES TO PRODUCE LIQUEFACTION OF THE REQUIRED MATERIAL.
