Summary

THE MECHANISM OF GAINS THROUGH OUTER WALLS ARE STUDIED UNDER STEADY AND UNSTEADY CONDITIONS, DEFINING THE CONCEPT OF VIRTUAL EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE (WHICH WOULD PRODUCE UNDER STEADY CONDITIONS A HEAT GAIN IDENTICAL TO THAT PRODUCED UNDER ACTUAL EXTERNAL UNSTEADY CONDITIONS). A SERIES OF TABLES GIVE THE PRECALCULATED VALUES OF THE VIRTUAL DEVIATION BETWEEN THE EXTERNAL VIRTUAL TEMPERATURE AND AN ASSUMED INTERNAL TEMPERATURE OF 298 K (25 DEG C) FOR GLAZED WALLS AND FOR OPAQUE WALLS (VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL) IN A GREAT NUMBER OF CASE STUDIES (WALL IN THE SHADE AND 16 CASES OF SUN EXPOSURE OF SUNLIT WALLS, FOR THE 15 DIURNAL HOURS OF JUNE TO SEPTEMBER) AND FOR THREE TYPICAL CASES OF EXTERNAL SURFACE, THREE CASES OF COMPOSITION OF VERTICAL WALLS AND ONE CASE OF TERRACE ROOF. AN EXAMPLE ILLUSTRATES THE USE OF THE METHOD AND THE TABLES. J.R.
