Simulation model of a CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration system prototype.

Author(s) : FERNÁNDEZ-SEARA J., ARIAS A., DOPAZO A., et al.

Summary

Cascade refrigeration systems with CO2 and NH3 as working fluids in the low and high temperature stages, respectively, constitute an excellent alternative for low temperature (-40/-50°C) cooling applications, such as freezing processes or the storage of frozen products. The design and selection of the main components of a CO2/NH3 cascade system prototype have already been done and the experimental setup is now being built at our laboratory. In order to evaluate previously the performance of the prototype, a detailed simulation model has been developed. This model takes into account specific data and characteristics of the main components, such as compressor characteristic charts, heat exchangers surface areas and so on. In the paper, the prototype and the main components are described, the simulation model is detailed, and the outstanding results are presented and discussed.
