Sizing of ventilation openings in buildings with passive downdraught evaporative cooling.

Summary

The paper describes a sizing equation which provides the ratio of the opening sizes on one storey to those on another necessary to achieve equal flow rates. The equation has been applied to a passive downdraught evaporative cooling building design and the opening size predictions tested using a computational fluid dynamics model. Results are very encouraging, although further work is needed to investigate remaining imbalances in flow rates.
